Turner Award of Excellence

(ARLINGTON, TEXAS) – Completed in January 2023, The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) School of Nursing and Social Work ushered in critical advancements in healthcare education. This $76 million facility is utilized to teach and train the next generation of social workers and healthcare professionals.

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY

Sitting on four levels and 150,000 square feet, this building is a state-of-the-art space that will serve current and future University of Arlington (UTA) students. This technology-enriched facility combines state-of-the-art learning spaces, teaching
and research laboratories, a smart hospital simulation learning center, student engagement, study and support areas, and faculty and staff offices. Additionally, training space with mock patient rooms and medical robots showcasing the technological advancements that differentiate this campus building from its competitors.

DIFFICULTY IN CONSTRUCTION

The UTA School of Nursing and Social Work project was located in the heart of a lively university campus. Heavy student traffic posed a challenge throughout construction. As a result, our employees had to accommodate the active campus by reworking the main power utilities to provide temporary power, as it serviced an existing university building.

Unforeseen sight conditions forced underground utilities to be installed at 14 feet below grade, which posed a unique opportunity for our team to demonstrate its agility in re-imagining our installations to meet this site requirement. Existing duct banks needed to be re-routed and coordinated, creating difficulty during our installation. As a result of this solution, our field employees installed complex duct banks for electrical secondary, emergency generator feeds, and primary telecommunication raceways.

ELECTRIAL INSTALLATIONS

Brandt assisted in evaluating lighting control systems, distribution techniques, selective coordination of the distribution system, site duct-bank routing, and fixture selections. Additional electrical installations included:

  • Fixtures, Lighting Branch & Lighting Controls
  • Power devices, Floor boxes, and Branch Power
  • Equipment Power & Connections
  • Normal and emergency Switchgear/Distribution
  • Low Voltage Raceways for Fire Alarm, Security, A/V, and Tele/Data
  • Lightning Protection and Counterpoise System
  • Temporary Power

We accomplished a stellar safety record on this project, achieving 1 year and 9 months of zero recordables, with over 62,000 employee hours worked.

AWARD-WINNING

In 2022, Turner Construction awarded Brandt a Turner Award of Excellence for our involvement. In 2023, Brandt received a TEXO Distinguished Building Award and an Associated General Contractors Texas Building Branch Award for this project.
