Over the years, we’ve helped numerous companies in a variety of industries successfully complete new construction or renovation projects. One of the many renovations we’ve had the pleasure to be a part of includes the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) Financial Center of San Antonio. Read on to learn how our team assisted USAA with improving their San Antonio Riverwalk office.
The Challenge
USAA is a San Antonio-based financial institution with branch offices in Phoenix, Arizona; Chesapeake, Virginia; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Highland Falls, New York; Plano, Texas; and Tampa, Florida. They offer a variety of financial solutions that include investing, banking, and insurance services to people and their families who serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces. The company is one of the city’s largest employers in the area with a total of approximately 19,000 of its 32,000-member workforce living within the boundaries of San Antonio.
As with any aging building, there was a fair amount of wear and tear in various parts of the structure. As a result, the San Antonio headquarters was in need of renovation services. General contractor, Whiting-Turner awarded Brandt three separate contracts for the overall project. Each project would entail extensive mechanical and plumbing renovations on four floors of the 28-story building. Upon successful completion of the first contract, Whiting-Turner would then reward Brandt with the remaining two contracts.
The Solution
As leaders in our industry, we were confident in our team’s ability to deliver high-quality results and looked forward to the chance to prove ourselves. We started our assignment by demolishing the building’s outdated mechanical system, as well as removing all the ductwork and hydronic piping on the floor. Our staff then reinstalled the ductwork and hydronic piping after renovating the restrooms and installing new plumbing and mechanical fixtures.
Since indoor air quality was a concern for this building as well, we also took a look at their air handlers. It appeared that the air handlers were quite old, so our team removed the aging air handlers and replaced them with upgraded custom Temtrol air handlers. Due to the size of the new air handlers, it was necessary for our team to disassemble the equipment before transporting it to a higher level using the elevator. Upon reaching the point of installation, we reconstructed the air handlers and then installed them.
The Result
Brandt was able to efficiently perform all the necessary tasks while remaining on time and within budget. Pleased with what our team was able to accomplish, Whiting-Turner rewarded us with the final two contracts. The project lasted for a total of nine months altogether.
During this time, the building remained occupied by USAA employees and clients. To prevent causing a disturbance during regular business hours, our team worked around noise restrictions. We made the extra effort to be as flexible as possible, finishing our work either before the bank opened or starting after it closed.
In the end, the USAA was happy with the finished product. Now that the construction is over and the client is satisfied, the USAA is expecting to relocate about 380 personnel to the Riverwalk building from their University Park campus by the end of the year.
