Brandt Teams Up on the Main Methodist Hospital Expansion

The main Methodist Hospital expansion is a Brandt flagship commercial construction project. The main Methodist Hospital expansion in San Antonio, Texas is Methodist Hospital’s largest construction project to date. The current campus will be extended by a total of 445,000 square feet on completion, including substantial expansion and renovation of the current Methodist Children’s hospital. More than 90 percent of patient rooms in the new expansion will be private facilities designed to provide industry-leading care for patients and their families.

 The Main Methodist Construction Project

The project team for this major expansion includes architects, engineers and multiple contractors, with ownership by the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). The building as a whole comprises 850,000 square feet, with a mechanical/plumbing volume of $46 million. Brandt’s role in the main Methodist Hospital inspection is as provider of mechanical and plumbing services for the entire expansion. The timeline runs from June of 2014 through June of 2017.

The Methodist Children’s Hospital

The children’s facilities at the Methodist Hospital are already a vibrant part of the existing hospital. The children’s emergency room is the busiest pediatric emergency facility in the nation, known for exemplary pediatric care. The current project will expand the Children’s emergency department to 40 beds and the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) to 94 beds, as well as create a new entrance for the Children’s Hospital. The crown jewel of the children’s facility construction is a 6-story patient care tower.

Methodist Hospital Improvements

The adult hospital campus will undergo major improvements as well, including a new entrance to the campus designed to be more accessible for women coming to the facility for labor and delivery. The central tower of the hospital is being significantly expanded, and the adult emergency department will house 48 treatment rooms upon completion. A nine-story parking garage rounds out the expansion.
